Cookies Best BBQ Sauce really is Iowa’s favorite condiment. And for years, people have been using it not only to flavor meats, but also as a somewhat improbable dip for chips.
No need any longer. Speed Herrig’s Wall Lake company began offering its own version of barbecue potato chips last summer and by all accounts, the chips are flying off the shelves. (That might be why we hadn’t noticed them until making a trip to northwest Iowa in the middle of November.
The chips are produced by Barrel O’ Fun Snack Foods Co., a Perham, Mn., company that produces 20 varieties of snacks under its own label

as well as other snacks under customer labels.
The Cookie’s chips don’t disappoint lovers of the sweet sauce that the bearded “Speed” Herrig (his real name is Duane; his nickname comes from his longtime affinity for fast cars) made famous when he bought Cookie’s in 1984. We stocked up on several bags based on our own rapid rate of consumption of the barbecue sauce.
The chips themselves taste fresh and
crunchy, the perfect complement to the flavor of Cookies’ sauce.
They join a product line that has expanded mightily since Herrig bought the company from L.D. Cook. Cook produced the first batch of the sauce in his kitchen in 1976 and brought Herrig into the company in 1977 as a salesman. Today, Cookies also sells its sauces in western and country varieties as well as mild and medium salsas; taco sauce and dip; a "Wings-N-Things" hot sauce; and an all-purpose seasoning.
The chips are distributed through much of the state by Farner Bocken and available at Hy-Vee, Fareway, and Dahls grocery stores.
