Iowa's Online Regional Magazine

Essential Iowa welcomes submissions. We love pieces about little-known attractions, places, festivals, things to eat, Iowa artists and musicians, etc. Few topics are off limits, provided they are well written and not purposely offensive. We are on a relentless search to find the best homemade pork tenderloin in the state, and if you’ve eaten one, send us a digital picture, a description of where you ate it, what it cost and what made it so special.
Before submitting, readers should spend a little time knocking around the web site to get a feel for the tone, topics and treatment we give our stories. We love sidebars and lists, photos and graphics.
There are plenty of things we won’t run, including personal reflections or the kind of musings that show up on weblogs. We’re not all that interested in fiction, unless it’s very good and if it is of the quality that we would run, you no doubt could get a lot more money from a print publication.
Mostly, we’re looking for journalism that helps paint a picture of life in Iowa. We’re looking for the kinds of stories that might prompt someone to get off the couch, get in the car, and get into Iowa.
The editor has the last word on whether something runs. It will probably end up on the web site rather quickly.
Oh, yeah. Essential Iowa doesn’t pay much, if anything, for stories. That’s because we don’t really have much money. When we do, we divvy it up as we see fit. But if you want to get published and want some feedback on your writing, we're a good place to start.
