The Mamie Doud Eisenhower Birthplace, 709 Carroll Street, is
Boone’s original tourist attraction, a fascinating stop for folks who want to learn more about the life of one of our nation’s most popular First Ladies. Eisenhower was born in Boone and lived here until she turned seven, when her family moved to Colorado. However, she frequently visited friends and family in the area and made visits with her husband, Dwight Eisenhower. The birthplace, which now serves as a museum, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June to October and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday in April and May. Telephone 515-432-1896.

The Boone County Historical Center, unfortunately, is often overlooked by travelers who come here to see the Eisenhower birthplace and take a ride on the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad. Pity. The museum, at 602 Story St., is housed in an imposing former Masonic Temple that was built in 1907 and includes exhibits on Native American, military, and local history of this area. Special and traveling exhibits featured throughout the year. 602 Story St. 515-432-1907
