A River Runs Under It
Folks in eastern Iowa are talking about the new Interstate 74 Bridge that will span the Mississippi between Davenport and Moline. Those of us in land-locked Iowa don’t think about how important a bridge is to everyday life when you life on the river, but folks in the Quad Cities say that it’s been a long time coming.
The new bridge will be a twin arch design, which means it will actually be two bridges instead of one. Iowa and Illinois is splitting the cost for the project (actually much of it will be paid for with federal dollars). The cost: $650 million.
Thousands of cars and trucks cross the Mississippi every day, providing a vital link to people who work in jobs on one side of the river but live on the other. Project Manager Lidia Pilecky says that lanes will remain open going both directions for the duration of the project, which could take five years.
Still, Quad City residents are dubious about the way the construction will disrupt their lives. One wag noted on a message board yesterday: “In our reality it might be done sometime in the next 20 or so years. Then the next year it will start having lane closures for cleaning and painting...”

Another Chance to Buy Local Products
TThe Downtown Farmers Market in Des Moines announced today plans to extend its season through the end of the year with a Harvest Farmers Market and a Winter Farmers Market. The Downtown Farmers Market has closed for the season in October in previous year.
The November Harvest Farmers Market and the December Winter Farmers Market will be located inside Capital Square and outdoors at Nollen Plaza, 400 Locust St. The markets will from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18. and Saturday, Dec. 16.
Products on sale at the November and December markets will include locally raised eggs, beef, pork, duck, turkeys, holiday hams, and late season and greenhouse produce. In addition, the market will offer fresh homemade products including locally produced honey, jams, salsa, wine, cheese, soy nuts, homemade noodles, baked breads, pies and cinnamon rolls and holiday items, including fresh cut Christmas trees.
